The San Diego Humane Society adopted out 212 pets for the free “Clear the Shelters Day” Saturday as the total pets given new homes nears 2,000 for the month.

Though the Humane Society, in partnership with NBC Universal and Telemundo set aside Aug. 27 as a single day to clear shelters, the charity actually has run the promotion for all of August.

The Humane Society has marked the promotion at its San Diego, Escondido, El Cajon and Oceanside sites. A total of 1,725 pets have been adopted through Saturday.

Clear the Shelters continues Sunday through Wednesday, the final day of the month. Though fees won’t still be free, they will be sharply reduced – adoptions cost $20 for dogs, cats and kittens, and $5 for small pets.

The Humane Society is closed Mondays, but is open for adoptions Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Adoptable pets can be viewed online.
