A pedestrian died after being hit by a northbound Coaster train Saturday, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

Just after 9:30 a.m., deputies from a North Coastal Transit Enforcement Unit responded to a report of a pedestrian who was struck in the restricted area of the railroad track near Sassafras Street.

The area lies between the Washington Street and Middletown stations near a San Diego airport parking lot.

Medics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, said Deputy Tyler Eikermann.

The manner of the person’s death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Sheriff’s transit unit investigates incidents along the routes of the North County Transit District.

Anyone with information about the incident was urged to call the Sheriff’s Department’s non-emergency line at 858-565-5200.
