A man died in National City Saturday evening after being shot multiple times near El Toyon Park.

The victim, described only as a black male, had been near a motorcycle when he was wounded in the 100 block of U Avenue, according to OnScene.TV. A helmet lay on the ground afterwards amid police evidence markers.

Officers arrived after receiving reports at 5:41 p.m. that several shots had been fired and a man was down, an investigations lieutenant with the National City Police Department told OnScene.

Officers started CPR, then medics transported the victim to a local trauma center.

Police said that though there were witnesses to the shooting, they had “very limited details” at the early stages of the investigation. Officers were searching the park for evidence.

Police said they had identified the victim, but withheld his name pending notification of next of kin. They also asked that if members of the public saw or heard anything connected to the case, to contact the department at 619-336-4411.
