Local collegiate rowers earned places among the top performers at this weekend’s San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.

After the UC San Diego men’s rowing team’s third Varsity 8 cruised to victory by over 15 seconds, the second Varsity 8 mounted an intense sprint to the finish. It proved successful as they came from behind to win the Tritons’ second trophy at the classic.

UCSD women’s rowing took first as well. They won the 2V final over the University of San Diego. In the Collegiate Varsity 4+, USD turned it around, beating UCSD.

In addition, the UCSD women’s first varsity placed fifth in the Collegiate Varsity UCSD Health Cal Cup and the second 4+ finished fourth in the collegiate fours B-entries.

Men’s coach Sean McCrea praised his third Varsity 8’s ability to perform with limited practice.

“A lot of those guys are freshmen, and most of them didn’t get to race at our last regatta in Newport, so this is their first race of the season,” he said. “For them to be able to come out, execute, and walk away with a trophy is awesome.”

San Diego State also competed, with their best finish, third, coming in the men’s Collegiate Novice category.

UC Davis, Stanford University, M.I.T., Texas-Austin and Purdue also logged wins. Regatta Timing has the full results across the collegiate, youth, alumni and masters’ categories.
