A 24-year-old man was killed early Tuesday when the car he was driving crashed on Interstate 805 in North Park and burst into flames.

The Chula Vista resident lost control of the Toyota sedan for unknown reasons while headed south near University Avenue at about 2:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle veered to the left and struck a center-divider wall, and the impact ejected the motorist onto the roadway. The car then became engulfed by fire, CHP Officer Jesse Matias said.

The man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.

The fatal accident left the entire southbound side of the freeway blocked in the area for a time. All the affected lanes were open again shortly after 4:30 a.m., Matias said.
