The San Diego City Council passed a resolution 8-0 Tuesday declaring support for Congresswoman Sara Jacobs’ “My Body, My Data” Act, which would create a new national standard to protect personal reproductive health data from being weaponized and misused.
Rep. Jacobs joined local leaders including councilmembers Jennifer Campbell and Marni von Wilpert, who brought forward the resolution, at a press conference Tuesday to share the announcement.
So grateful for @SDCityCouncil's support of my bill, the My Body, My Data Act, to create a new national standard to protect reproductive and sexual health data. “I’m so grateful for the San Diego City Council’s support of my bill, the ‘My Body, My Data Act,’ to create a new national standard to protect reproductive and sexual health data,” Jacobs said. “Now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, it’s up to all of us — at every level of government — to protect reproductive rights, including abortion access and privacy of our reproductive and sexual health data. It’s unconscionable that this information could be sold to the highest bidder, turned over to the government and weaponized against us, and especially against low-income people and people of color who will be most impacted now that Roe is overturned.”
Jacobs, who represents central San Diego County, introduced the bill last month which would protect personal reproductive health data by minimizing the information that companies can collect and retain, for example through period tracking apps, according to the congresswoman’s office.
