It started as a passion project to help local animal organizations impacted by shutdowns during COVID-19.

Non-profit founder and humane education expert, Annie Petersen, Ed.D. saw animal welfare groups struggling, so she created Animal Bond Academy, a humane education channel on YouTube to raise awareness for rescues, shelters, and humane education groups while providing an accessible resource for animal lovers.

“Early on during COVID, these organizations couldn’t conduct many of the in-person programs that help fund veterinary and day-to-day care, but they still had to feed and care for animals,” Dr. Petersen said. “I couldn’t just stand by and watch them struggle, so I started Animal Bond Academy to help raise awareness and connect animal lovers to these amazing organizations.”

Animal Bond Academy just launched its third season and has now profiled more than 37 groups, including Horses of Tir Na Nog, San Diego’s longest-operating equine sanctuary, Libby Lou’s Safe Haven, San Diego’s newest micro-sanctuary for rescued cows, and the FACE Foundation, saving pets from economic euthanasia.

“We’ve been providing a haven to rescued animals in San Diego for years,” said Amy Pat Rigney founder of the nonprofit Tir Na Nog, “but we’re still a best-kept secret – and that’s not a good thing! We’re so thankful to Animal Bond Academy and all the work they do to support organizations like ours.”

“San Diego is home to many small but mighty animal groups doing incredible work to help animals,” Petersen said. “My goal now is to grow this COVID passion project to build even more support for animals and animal organizations throughout San Diego and Southern California.”
