The MLB Draft concluded Tuesday with multiple local college players among the chosen few.
Two went in the fourth round – the Detroit Tigers picked San Diego State pitcher Troy Melton, while the Boston Red Sox followed with Chase Meidroth, a shortstop from the University of San Diego.
In addition, the Padres added 18 more picks; 11 of their total draft haul are pitchers.
Four of their top picks, in fact, were hurlers, including Henry Williams, out of Duke University, taken at No. 91 overall in the third round. The Padres drafted recent high-school grad Dylan Lesko with their first pick Sunday.
Among the other Padre picks:
- Two who play college ball in California – Nathan Martorella, a first baseman out of Cal, in the fifth round, and Nick Vogt, an outfielder from UC Santa Barbara, in the seventh.
- Five more high school graduates, including Lamar King Jr., a catcher from Maryland in the fourth round.
- Aside from Vogt, in rounds 6-10, the Padres selected – Jacob Marsee, OF, Central Michigan; Griffin Doersching, 1B, Oklahoma State; Dylan Nedved, P, Iowa, and Jackson Smeltz, P, Purdue.
Rounding out the other local college and prep picks:
- Philadelphia Phillies – Caleb Ricketts, a USD catcher, seventh round
- Toronto Blue Jays – Ian Churchill, a USD pitcher, 10th round
- Texas Rangers – Andrew Owen, a Grossmont College pitcher, 14th round.
- Minnesota Twins– Zachary Veen, a Point Loma Nazarene pitcher, 18th round.
Tyler Bremner, from Scripps Ranch High, who took part in the MLB Combine last month, went undrafted.
Former San Diego County prepsters also were drafted:
- New York Yankees – La Costa Canyon graduate Spencer Jones, an outfielder from Vanderbilt, 25th overall in the first round.
- Houston Astros – Carlsbad High grad Michael Knorr, a pitcher from Coastal Carolina, 103rd overall in the third round.
