San Diego County health officials on Tuesday reported a declining trend in new COVID cases over the July 4 weekend, though hospitalizations remained high and there were eight more deaths.

The Health and Human Services Agency reported 1,524 news cases on Friday, 1,342 on Saturday, 1,029 on Sunday and 991 on Monday.

However, experts warned of possible undercounting due to delays in reporting from the weekend. In addition, the prevalence of take-home COVID tests means new cases are not always reported to the county.

A total of 308 people were hospitalized as of Friday, with 34 of those patients in intensive care.

The county typically updates COVID data on Mondays and Thursdays, though the latest data was delayed by the July 4 holiday.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 840,893 confirmed cases of the virus and 5,349 deaths for a fatality rate of 0.6%.
