Feeling active this San Diego weekend, or perhaps, sapped by the unrelenting heat, you just want to sip a cool drink and watch others get their surf, ball and stories on? We’re here for you.
That new San Diego Padre, Juan Soto? He’s sort of a big deal. The Pads have mostly been on the road since he arrived via blockbuster trade, but this weekend they host his old team, the Washington Nationals, at Petco Park. Cheer on the Friars because they need some hometown love after last week’s big hurt. Tickets start at $29.50 for the weekend, with the best availability for Sunday’s 1:10 p.m. contest.
Check out the action at the 45th annual World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside Saturday and Sunday. Up to 400 contestants of all ages, from 12 to 65 and up, compete in their age groups, with the prelims the first day, and semis and finals to close things out Sunday. Watch for free off the Oceanside Pier beginning bright and early at 6:30 a.m.
You have two chances to support your favorite author, past and present on Saturday:
- Union-Tribune Festival of Books – The University of San Diego hosts the mostly free 10 a.m. event. Online reservations are required and some panels cost $5. Like a dose of Hollywood with your tomes? David Duchovny of “X-Files” fame, now an author, appears, as well as Ron Shelton, writer of the baseball classic Bull Durham.
- Twain Fest – at 11 a.m. at Heritage County Park in Old Town. Enjoy dramatic readings of Mark Twain and other top 19th-century writers and poets. There are many activities for children too, some evoking the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Alice in Wonderland. Online reservations are required and are available for the afternoon sessions.

Lemonade? A watermelon refresher, mayhaps? Hey, it’s San Diego – no thanks. A brew please. 91X serves them up at 2 p.m. Saturday, along with tunes, at BeerX 2022 at Waterfront Park. Headliners Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats lead a bill that includes Chicano Batman and Los Tortugas. More than 40 brewers are set to serve up the suds. Admission starts at $60 with beer samples, and $40 for performances only.
The Julian Chamber of Commerce joins the San Diego County Library to host Julian Natural Wonderfest at Jess Martin County Park at 4 p.m Saturday. The free event features some up- close-and-personal moments with wildlife, along with music and art. And when it’s time to chill after the sun sets, a star party. Shuttles are available.
Finally, Nova Easy Kombucha hosts the Beach Volleyball Bash at Del Mar’s Dog Beach at 9 a.m. Sunday. The 10-team semi-pro tournament is free for spectators, with samples of Nova’s non-alcoholic kombucha available, and a raffle. DJ Mancat, who performs for three San Diego teams – the Seals, Gulls and champion Sockers – spins until noon.
