San Diego Weekend Guide: Aug. 5-7 – Ales & Art

Life is a cabaret, old chum, so why not stroll from stage to stage, booth to booth or brewer to brewer to enjoy music, art and sips this San Diego weekend?

Staycations are a thing this expensive summer, so dip into others cultures with:

• Tiki Oasis, touted as the world’s largest such festival, continues through Sunday. Check out what organizers call the Polynesian Pop scene, including art, music and cocktails, at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley. Full passes are available; evening tickets start at $45.
• Artists from all over Latin America convene at Old Town’s Bazaar del Mundo for the free Latin American Festival and Mata Ortiz Pottery Market opening at 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday. Crafters include wood carvers, jewelers and weavers.

Love outdoor movies? Each Friday in August turn to the Gaslamp Quarter for free double features on Island Avenue between Fourth and Fifth avenues. Up this week – 2019’s The Lion King re-boot and animated favorite Encanto. Screenings start at 7:45 p.m. each week.

Artists will set up camp in Point Loma Saturday and Sunday for Art Walk, the free event that includes this Liberty Station stop. More than 150 – not just locals, but from out of state and Mexico too – will display their talents. Gate open at 10 a.m. A new wrinkle – Art Walk is fenced off. Why? So attendees can enjoy cocktails throughout the event, rather than being limited to a Beer Garden.

Want to try some of top South Bay brews? Sabor de Third on Third Avenue is Chula Vista is a self-guided Saturday tour where strollers can enjoy tasters – food too – from participants in Third Avenue Village. Some of the spots – Thr3e Punk Ales, Chula Vista Brewery and Los Cuates Seafood and Bar. Online admission for the noon event costs $25.

The electronic music festival CRSSD hosts an “extra-large” two-day event at Waterfront Park and venues in and fanning out from downtown (including Music Box and Spin). Eric Prydz, Claptone, Purple Disco Machine, Miss Monique and more perform. Gates open at the park at noon Saturday and Sunday. Full-fest admission costs $155 and one-day, $80. Separate tickets are available for the late events outside the park.

Pechanga Arena welcomes the all-ages Nortenos y Bandas Fest at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, which includes performers Conjunto Primavera, Los Rieleros del Norte and Banda Los Sebastianes. Tickets start at $59.

Cabaret, the musical, at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, though known for its sexy sass and brass, always has been topical. It depicts the slide of Germany in the ’20s and ’30s into Nazism. Parallels to today? You decide. The show, including evening and matinee performances Friday through Sunday, continues through Sept. 18. Tickets start at $40.
