San Diego Humane Society President Gary Weitzman plans to leave Sunday on a 10-day trip to Poland to set up a veterinary clinic near the Ukraine border to treat refugees’ pets.

“As soon as the war broke out in Ukraine, we started looking for ways to support people with pets and animals left behind by this tragedy,” said Weitzman.

He plans to bring veterinary supplies to Poland, which has opened its doors to millions of refugees amid the brutal Russian invasion.

Working with Seattle-based Greater Good Charities, Weitzman will help set up a border crossing veterinary clinic in Przemyśl, Poland, and make arrangements for additional Humane Society veterinarians and animal care staff to support pets affected by the war in Ukraine.

“Our goal is to make an impact for animals and people in this tragic crisis,” he said.

Serving San Diego County since 1880, the Humane Society has campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona and San Diego.
