The California Highway Patrol announced Wednesday a “maximum enforcement period” to ensure road safety over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The CHP said the maximum enforcement effort would bein at 6:01 p.m. on Friday and continue through 11:59 p.m. on Monday with officers on the lookout for traffic violations and drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Alcohol-and drug-impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of traffic fatalities and injuries in California, and the moment an impaired driver gets behind the wheel, they put themselves and every other person on the road in great danger,” said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray.

Last year during the Labor Day holiday weekend 43 people were killed in crashes on California roads. The CHP made 985 DUI arrests and issued more than 6,000 speeding tickets during the period.

“The CHP is committed to enforcement and non-enforcement strategies, including education and community engagement, to ensure the highest level of safety for everyone traveling throughout California during the holiday,” said Ray.

She urged Californians to call 9-1-1 with a vehicle description, location and direction of travel if impaired driving is suspected.
