A suspect who engaged police in a high-speed pursuit was taken into custody Sunday after a brief standoff, authorities said.

Officers pulled over a black vehicle at around 10:20 a.m. Sunday and were prepared to charge the suspect with reckless driving for running red lights and equipment violations, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The chase started when the suspect sped away as the officers approached, and the pursuit went onto Interstate 5 north through downtown San Diego, police said, adding that the suspect hit speeds of more than 100 mph.

Police also said he hit at least one other car during the pursuit.

At 10:27 a.m., officers stopped pursuing and fell back as a helicopter tracked the suspect, who was located at the Hawthorne Street exit.

Officers tried to get the suspect to come out of his vehicle, and he was taken into custody at 10:55 a.m.

Traffic was shut down on area freeways, including the 163 south exit on I-5 north, police said.

By 11:23 a.m., Caltrans tweeted that all lanes had reopened.
