The Padres made short work of Minnesota Friday to begin their home stand, pounding the Twins 10-1.

Blake Snell benefitted from the largesse of his teammates, who hit five balls out of Petco Park to help him to his third win on the season. The lefty gave up one run in six innings while striking out seven.

Luke Voit began the onslaught in the first with a two-run home run, followed by a solo homers from Ha-Seong Kim in the second and Eric Hosmer in the fourth.

Already up 4-0, the Padres exploded for six in the fifth inning, and with two out to boot. Manny Machado started off the scoring with a two-run homer, his 17th, to drive in Kim, who had singled.

Two batters later, Voit doubled in Jake Cronenworth, who also had singled. Eric Hosmer walked, setting up Jorge Alfaro to hit the Friars’ second homer of the inning, a three-run blast.

“Hopefully, it’s the sign of something to come,” Melvin said of his team’s rare offensive outburst.

Meanwhile, the team is closing in on agreement with Joe Musgrove to extend his contract, according to MLB.com, which quoted various sources placing the value of the deal at approximately $100 million over five years.

The pitcher, an El Cajon native, has enjoyed his taste of home cooking, from throwing the Padres’ first-ever no-hitter last year to playing in his first All-Star Game this season.

The Padres acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the 2021 season.

“I’d love to see it,” Melvin said of the reported extension. ” … and so would everybody in that room,” he added of the clubhouse.

Musgrove and Sean Manaea are set to start for the Padres Saturday and Sunday.
