California Highway Patrol officers made 291 arrests throughout the state for impaired driving on the first night of the holiday maximum enforcement period, officials said.
The period continues through the Independence Day holiday weekend, from 6:01 p.m. Friday and until 11:59 p.m. Monday. The CHP is deploying extra patrol officers as part of the period.
In addition to speeding violations, officers will be on the lookout for distracted and aggressive drivers, and motorists suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
The CHP reminded motorists that driving too fast is illegal and the leading cause of traffic fatalities.
If you're heading out on a road trip this holiday weekend, slow down and arrive safely. Speed is the main factor in traffic-related deaths in CA. The CHP's Maximum Enforcement Period is officially underway and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 4.
